Tip #6: Be Authentic
Whatever we learn to do, we learn by actually doing it; men come to be builders, for instance, by building and harp players by playing the harp. In the same way, by doing just acts we come to be just: By doing self-controlled acts, we come to be self-controlled; and by doing brave acts, we become brave.”
-Aristotle
Each night, I sit at my desk with a piece of paper and a pen to write the “daily tip.” And the strangest thing happens, my mind is filled with … pretty much … nothing.
Now, I realize that my expectations were unrealistic. I wanted each tip to be life-changing and awe-inspiring (and of course, immediately). Perfectionism at its best. I decided to think rationally and let this process, like anything new, evolve naturally and imperfectly. I am certainly not an “expert,” and my “daily tips” will reflect that.
I did lots of soul-searching and then asked myself, “now what?” What can I do in this moment?
I decided to follow Aristotle’s advice and share this authentic experience with you.
Take home message:
By doing authentic acts, we learn to be authentic. We must do to learn.
