Tip #8: Discover Something New

There is no such thing as a failed experiment, only experiments with unexpected outcomes.”
-Richard Buckminster Fuller

I recently discovered the work and writing of Richard Buckminster Fuller through Josh Weinberger (@kitson) on Twitter. I often feel that I am at information overload due to the constant streams of information moving towards me; however, how much of this information are we truly acknowledging?

Now, take a minute and identify one piece of information to explore. You may find a quote, a daily tip, or possibly just the name of someone you had never heard of. Take a few minutes and interact with this information. Look for the original source of the quote, practice the daily tip, or read more about the individual. You are bound to discover something new.

In the example below, I will introduce you to an individual worth discovering – a life lived fully and authentically, my best friend: Matt Ortiz.

We often overlook information and inspiration that is right in front of us. Personally, I tend to ignore a lot of information so I don’t become overwhelmed. But there is a point at which you can easily become underwhelmed – lacking mental stimulation.

Take Home Message:

Each day, take a few minutes to discover what “is,” now.

“It was amazing. There were nine of us in a row running single file. I was in the lead, setting the pace as we ran our thirty-two laps. A cool night had settled upon us, the track was lit, there were college students everywhere talking and walking and we just weaved in and out of them, humming along. I was asked to speak at the Luminary Ceremony, but had laryngitis from radiation. One of my fellow chairs spoke and was so impressed by me that she talked about me during her speech. Then, she called me up on stage! It was magnificent; I finally felt it, the awesome power of being a role model, of having a positive influence, of knowing that I could touch people, and that I already had. After the Luminary Ceremony was over, all of the Relay people gathered around and hugged. I finally got it, what it meant to be ‘reborn.’ I knew from that moment on that I had been given a tremendous gift. I could influence others in a way that not many people ever get the chance to.”
