Tip #37: Lend a Helping Hand
If you can’t feed a hundred people, then just feed one.”
-Mother Teresa
Helping others is typically defined as a selfless activity. The truth is that helping others can do as much for the giver as it does for the recipient. Not only does the act of lending a helping hand make you feel good, it also provides a good deal of perspective. Your general outlook is altered as your focus turns outward. In addition, the idea that – regardless of your situation or personal challenges – you have something to contribute is very empowering.
Now, think of someone who needs a helping hand. This does not need to be a huge undertaking like feeding the hungry – help takes many forms. Perhaps a sick friend needs groceries or a neighborhood park requires tending. Think how powerful you will feel when you are easily able to solve, what to others, may be a difficult problem. Will you have time to concentrate on your own issues as you shop for flu-friendly soup and juice? Will you feel renewed and energized as you clean up a park and restore nature’s beauty?
