Tip #44: Be the Leader in Your Life

The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails.”
-John Maxwell

Leadership is the way to take ownership and responsibility of your life. Challenges and obstacles can be overcome by taking control and developing a new approach. Remember that being the leader of your life means you can adjust your attitude, behavior, and perspective to whatever new realities you face. It’s okay to mourn defeats and have hope for the future, but ultimately you must lead yourself forward.

If you are not the leader in your life, then you are allowing events to lead you. You should always be the one charting your course. If life is leading you, then you may be feeling unhappy, unsatisfied, and unmotivated. Is being a follower, and simply reacting to whatever happens, worth the feelings of helplessness?

Now, think about how you can take charge of your life and be your own leader. Make a note of a challenge that may be pushing you off course. Then, decide how you can navigate around this obstacle with a new plan. Readjust your behavior and attitude to welcome the new approach, and in doing so, lead rather than react. Become the leader of your life now!

Mere acceptance of life’s bumps leads to a feeling of powerlessness. You have the choice to use your own leadership abilities to control how you move forward. Have faith in your leadership skills. Stop mourning what could have been and wishing for what might be. Take stock of your new reality and lead yourself onward!
