‘Faith’ Daily Tips:

Find the Silver Lining

September 4th, 2009

Our lives are composed of both negative and positive experiences. These experiences range in their intensity; however, regardless of the intensity, one must always remember that now is everything. When you’re experiencing happiness – truly experience that happiness (don’t feel bad about it!). And when you’re experiencing sadness – allow yourself to let go and cry – ask for support. It’s okay to cry, feel sorry for yourself, or become upset. The most important thing to remember: there is always hope.

After the first wave of emotion passes, we need to face the challenge and move forward. Part of that process involves looking for the positive in the situation, which may at first glance seem impossible. But through support and small steps, you empower yourself to take back control.

Now, think of something negative that you have experienced. Can you look back on it now and identify the good things that came out of your misfortune? Perhaps being laid off prompted you to start a new career or maybe a serious illness encouraged you to quit smoking. If you have difficulty finding the blessings hidden in tragedy, try looking at the experience from several different perspectives.

Tip #43: It’s Okay to Be Vulnerable

July 28th, 2009

With all the pain and challenges in life, it would seem foolhardy to encourage vulnerability.  However, there are benefits to allowing yourself to be open to the unknown and accepting your inability to handle every situation by yourself.

Now, think of a time that you were vulnerable. Perhaps it was the moment when you first told someone that you loved them?  Or maybe it was the last time you experienced problems with your health?  Chances are you were apprehensive (or just plain scared) about the outcome.  Will the person you love feel the same about you?  Will your illness be treatable?  While these events leave you open to harm, they can turn out to be positive experiences.  Consider the satisfaction of knowing that you are loved in return!  Imagine your joy when you learn that you will recover!  If however your vulnerability leaves you wounded, there are still lessons to be learned.  Emotional and physical pain can often be the impetus for positive personal change and improvement.  In addition, you will find yourself surrounded by an unexpected and kindly support system that you may not have realized existed.

Tip #41: Believe in Miracles

July 24th, 2009

We live in a world surrounded by science and technology.  We are told to believe in those things that can be seen and proven.  But, what about those events that occur outside of reasonable explanation?  How do doctors, scientists, and scholars define and explain those outstanding or unusual things that could not, or should not, happen?  Flukes?  Accidents?  Fate?  Mistakes?

Now, recall a time when something unexplainable happened.  Maybe it was a small thing, like finding forgotten money in a coat pocket when you were broke. Perhaps it was a big thing, like surviving a terrible automobile accident.  Whatever their size or seriousness, inexplicable things do happen.   These things could be written off as merely random occurrences. Why not believe in miracles and acknowledge the influence of a higher power? With this perspective, you are being sent a message and are rewarded with a second chance. Maybe the found money will encourage you to create a budget and stick to it. Perhaps the near-miss accident will cause you to reevaluate your life and priorities. Accidents happen, miracles are granted.
