Tip #56: Let Go of a Grudge

Even within the space of an hour, the weight of a grudge can drag you down – leaving you with little will to look up and smile at a friendly passerby. The effort wasted on holding a grudge will likely sap you of the strength and energy that you need to live – right now!

Now, reflect for just a few minutes and see if you are in fact bearing a grudge – even a tiny one. Try utilizing your inner strength to let go of the grudge (i.e., overpower the grudge). Even a small grudge will feed upon itself and can turn into a monolith! Now who would want to carry that around? It can be exhausting. Driving your car to work; racing around the grocery store at closing time; going to the cinema; attending your best friend’s birthday party – all with a monolith strapped to your back. It’s unnecessary as well as completely and utterly exhausting.

Tip #55: Age is Just a Number

Age has become a measurement for everything from beauty to mental aptitude. With that in mind, it would seem reasonable to experience a feeling of dread as each birthday approaches. Barring physical or mental health limitations, there are few things that we cannot do at any age! Why not celebrate your age!

Now, think of a negative thought or feeling you have about your age. Instead of focusing on what was, focus on what is. While you may not have zero body fat, think of all the wisdom you now possess. Rather than mourning the fact that you cannot party until dawn, cherish your maturity. Next time you count wrinkles, celebrate the experiences that created them. Aging is the natural progression of life. Each phase of growth has its own benefits and challenges. Age is only a number – whatever limitations you feel are self-made. Next time you bemoan your age look in a mirror and picture maturity, wisdom, and experience. Rejoice in your age today!

Tip #54: Be an Adventurer

The idea of an adventure conjures up images of safari hats, jungles, and death-defying escapes. However, being an adventurer in your life is far less risky. Adventurers welcome the unknown and seek out new experiences. Being an adventurer is an attitude – it puts fear behind curiosity and exploration. Trying new things can be scary, but it can also expand your knowledge, broaden your areas of interest, and build your confidence.

Now, think of something of in your life that you have always wanted to do, but were hesitant to try. Maybe it’s a vacation to an unfamiliar place. Perhaps it is learning to snowboard. Maybe it is a first time visit to an ethnic restaurant. Instead of focusing on your fear or uneasiness, consider the possibilities! Even if your trip down a new trail does not lead to success, you can be proud that you were brave enough to try something new and different. So, put on your safari hat and go on an adventure today!

Tip #53: Add Laughter to Your Life

A sense of humor is an incredible coping mechanism. It often provides the inner strength needed to surmount challenges that seem too difficult to endure. Seek relief through laughter by watching a funny movie, reading a comedic book, or doing something silly and playful. Take yourself less seriously and find your inner comedian.

Now, think of different ways to inject some laughter into your day. If humor is something that you don’t seek naturally, try moving beyond your comfort zone. Find opportunities to begin experimenting with the impact of laughter on your outlook and mood. What makes you laugh? How do you feel after you laugh?

Tip #52: Utilize an Athlete Mentality

Athletes possess a unique set of skills that enable them to physically and mentally push themselves beyond the normal limits of endurance. They are able to set goals and singularly focus on attaining those goals. They have trained their minds and bodies to push through doubt, pain, and fatigue. Athletes refuse to accept limits and failure. When they face obstacles they draw from their internal reserves to meet and overcome the challenge.

Now, think of a problem in your life. Focus on the challenge. Once you have developed a solution, set your sights on implementation. If you run up against an obstacle, use the determination of an athlete to keep pushing forward. Commit to your accomplishment by eliminating failure as an option. Be stubborn, be flexible, and be tireless. You will cross the finish line!
