Tip #43: It’s Okay to Be Vulnerable

July 28th, 2009

With all the pain and challenges in life, it would seem foolhardy to encourage vulnerability.  However, there are benefits to allowing yourself to be open to the unknown and accepting your inability to handle every situation by yourself.

Now, think of a time that you were vulnerable. Perhaps it was the moment when you first told someone that you loved them?  Or maybe it was the last time you experienced problems with your health?  Chances are you were apprehensive (or just plain scared) about the outcome.  Will the person you love feel the same about you?  Will your illness be treatable?  While these events leave you open to harm, they can turn out to be positive experiences.  Consider the satisfaction of knowing that you are loved in return!  Imagine your joy when you learn that you will recover!  If however your vulnerability leaves you wounded, there are still lessons to be learned.  Emotional and physical pain can often be the impetus for positive personal change and improvement.  In addition, you will find yourself surrounded by an unexpected and kindly support system that you may not have realized existed.

Tip #39: Choose Freedom

July 22nd, 2009

Perseverance and courage help you overcome obstacles as you meet them. Face these stumbling blocks, even when you have to say, “I’ll try again tomorrow.” Remember that you have the freedom to make mistakes. It’s okay to start over or take a few steps backwards.

If you’re not choosing freedom, you’re choosing fear. Your natural state is one of happiness, health, and abundance. If you are living without these, you are likely sacrificing your quality of life. Is a fear-driven life worth this sacrifice?

Now, choose to free yourself of old habits of thinking that no longer serve you. Write down something that you feel is beyond reach due to fear, a fear of failure, a fear of imperfect. Then, decide that you choose freedom. Free yourself of this fear and take one step towards that “something” you wrote down. Begin moving forward now!

Tip #32: Trust Your Intuition

July 13th, 2009

We are often told to trust our intuition, but like much advice it’s much easier said than done. What our gut tells us is often not the same message that we obtain from reasoning. We can’t control our gut feelings and often that’s what makes them so important.

Now, try making a decision with your intuition rather than following your conscious thoughts. For example, today, when you choose what to eat, do it with your intuition. Instead of choosing what is healthiest, or what you assume is your favorite dish, try attending to your gut feeling. Maybe it’s some sort of undefined creaminess you want, something hearty, or something refreshing. Don’t logic your way through the choice, just listen to what you really want.
