‘Mind-Body Health’ Daily Tips:

Tip #24: Document Your Story

July 1st, 2009

How often do you reflect on the ordinary moments that occur during the day? In the past, I rarely thought about these details until something forced me to (ex. an unmet goal – what went wrong?). Reflecting from this negative mindset, I found myself focusing on the holes and mishaps. They become magnified over time. For my sister’s 21st birthday, I created a scrapbook to document our lives together. It was an incredible process that opened my eyes to the power of documenting the ordinary and not-so-ordinary stuff that occurs every single day. I naturally gravitated towards journaling and now do it every night before I go to sleep. Reading through my journal, I am able to read my own story — and realize the true power within every single day. I now see the positives much more so than the holes in my journey. Those holes do exist, but carry little weight when compared to the positive memories.

Now, find a way to document your own story. We all have a story to tell. Remember that your story is just as important as any other individual’s story. Think about activities you enjoy – painting, music, writing, reading – and experiment with ways to document your day to day life. Your imagination can take you anywhere – think outside the box.

Tip #22: Sit Still

June 29th, 2009

If your gut reaction to today’s tip was “No way, it’s not possible!”, you stand even more to gain from doing it. For most of us, life is set on perpetual fast forward as we race from one task, errand, or obligation to another. By forcing yourself to stop and do nothing, you’ll automatically start to focus on the “ordinary miracles” that so often go overlooked: the sound of birds chirping, the smell of a fresh rain, the sound of children’s laughter, and the undiscovered insights buried in your mind.

Now, pick a spot and just stop, sit, and savor thirty minutes of stillness. Experiment with different locations and times of day to find the routine that works best for you.

Tip #20: Experience Mindful Eating

June 25th, 2009

We’ve all done it, and for some of us it’s a daily habit: multi-tasking while eating. No matter what simultaneous activity you’re performing during your meal — working on your computer, watching television, or reading a book — the distraction prevents you from focusing on your food, increasing the chances of overeating and detracting from your ability to savor the taste of what’s on your plate.

Now, next time you sit down for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, push aside the pile of mail, turn off the television, and funnel all of your attention on eating. You’ll be much more attuned to your body and more likely to stop eating when you’re full. As an added bonus, consuming food will become a richer, more sensory experience as you gain a new awareness of its flavors, smells, and textures.

Tip #4: Learn to Let Go

June 3rd, 2009

Learning to let go is one of life’s most difficult tasks. To let go often means giving up control and/or unrealistic expectations — allowing yourself to be imperfect. I recently wrote about letting go and related the process to a wedding reception. I said, “It’s like a wedding reception — even if everything goes wrong — at the end of the night… there are still two people madly in love. Nothing can take that away.”

Now, think about something within your life (e.g., a project, a daily ritual, perfectionism, a wedding) and evaluate the costs versus the benefits. Are the benefits worth the costs? If not, how can you take a step towards letting go? Often, the first (and most difficult) step is just realizing that you need to let go.

What people are saying

Perseverance beautifully organizes reminder after reminder that every moment is precious. As a long-time cancer thriver, I would not trade for the resources I was able to tap into by looking at the fragility of my own life. Perseverance serves as a tender wake-up reminder that the present is the future we worried about in the past.
