‘Wellness’ Daily Tips:

Tip #58: Create a Serenity Trigger

August 18th, 2009

In our fast-paced, multitasking, day-to-day lives, we often find ourselves adrift in chaos. Within this chaos, finding our inner calm is just as important —actually more so — than completing our next task. It allows us to recharge and breathe just a bit easier. It’s incredible what just five minutes of serenity can do for your energy level and mental state.

Now, think about how you currently deal with chaotic moments in your life. If you would like to change your current response to those chaotic moments, create a serenity trigger that will help you find a peaceful place whenever the need arises. This trigger serves as a reminder for you to take a few minutes away from what you’re doing to find serenity amidst chaos. It could be as simple as an image or a positive word/phrase.

Tip #56: Let Go of a Grudge

August 14th, 2009

Even within the space of an hour, the weight of a grudge can drag you down – leaving you with little will to look up and smile at a friendly passerby. The effort wasted on holding a grudge will likely sap you of the strength and energy that you need to live – right now!

Now, reflect for just a few minutes and see if you are in fact bearing a grudge – even a tiny one. Try utilizing your inner strength to let go of the grudge (i.e., overpower the grudge). Even a small grudge will feed upon itself and can turn into a monolith! Now who would want to carry that around? It can be exhausting. Driving your car to work; racing around the grocery store at closing time; going to the cinema; attending your best friend’s birthday party – all with a monolith strapped to your back. It’s unnecessary as well as completely and utterly exhausting.

Tip #53: Add Laughter to Your Life

August 11th, 2009

A sense of humor is an incredible coping mechanism. It often provides the inner strength needed to surmount challenges that seem too difficult to endure. Seek relief through laughter by watching a funny movie, reading a comedic book, or doing something silly and playful. Take yourself less seriously and find your inner comedian.

Now, think of different ways to inject some laughter into your day. If humor is something that you don’t seek naturally, try moving beyond your comfort zone. Find opportunities to begin experimenting with the impact of laughter on your outlook and mood. What makes you laugh? How do you feel after you laugh?

Tip #51: Turn up the Volume

August 7th, 2009

Music is an art that serves many functions. The right music can establish a mood, express an emotion, calm a soul, and energize a body. Music can also be associated with specific times and events in your life. Do you remember the song that was playing on the radio during your first date? What music did you choose for your wedding? Whether you prefer classical to rap or Broadway melodies to country, you have a soundtrack to your life.

Now, think of how your life has been touched by music. In addition to embellishing your celebrations, music can help you through tough times as well. When you are feeling a bit overwhelmed, listen to your favorite music and feel your attitude begin to change. If you are struggling to express yourself, find the right song to say what you cannot articulate yourself. If you have a friend that needs a lift, gift them with the right music. Use music to feed and express your internal tunes today!

Tip #43: It’s Okay to Be Vulnerable

July 28th, 2009

With all the pain and challenges in life, it would seem foolhardy to encourage vulnerability.  However, there are benefits to allowing yourself to be open to the unknown and accepting your inability to handle every situation by yourself.

Now, think of a time that you were vulnerable. Perhaps it was the moment when you first told someone that you loved them?  Or maybe it was the last time you experienced problems with your health?  Chances are you were apprehensive (or just plain scared) about the outcome.  Will the person you love feel the same about you?  Will your illness be treatable?  While these events leave you open to harm, they can turn out to be positive experiences.  Consider the satisfaction of knowing that you are loved in return!  Imagine your joy when you learn that you will recover!  If however your vulnerability leaves you wounded, there are still lessons to be learned.  Emotional and physical pain can often be the impetus for positive personal change and improvement.  In addition, you will find yourself surrounded by an unexpected and kindly support system that you may not have realized existed.
